2025 Iowa Adult Education and Literacy Summer Conference
Wednesday July 16, 2025 10:25am - 11:25am CDT
Reading efficiently is one key to performing well on all five subsection tests of the HiSET. Students need to know how and when to skim, scan, and read intensively. Many multilingual students second-guess themselves constantly while reading and spend significant amounts of time re-reading the same information. Many students believe that they must know every single word in a sentence to comprehend the entire sentence.

To address these challenges, Iowa Valley began piloting the use of AceReader, an online program designed to increase student's reading speed, comprehension, and fluency, during the 2024-2025 school year. This session will discuss how the software can minimize subvocalization, regression, and fixation time to help students become more efficient readers. The presenter will share data collected from participants over the course of the pilot year and will demonstrate how the software works.
